Millennium asparagus is a robust all-male hybrid, developed by the University of Guelph, known for its outstanding cold tolerance, sustained productivity, and strong disease resistance. Released as a public-domain F₁ hybrid by Dr. Dave Wolyn in the early 2000s, it was designed to replace older “Jersey” male hybrids by increasing the proportion of male plants to boost spear yield and extend bed lifespan. Trials in northern Minnesota recorded yields of 2,094 lb/acre, outperforming ‘Jersey Giant’ and ‘Jersey Knight.’ Long-term studies in Michigan confirm that Millennium delivers higher cumulative yields, vigorous ferns, and superior crown survival, along with excellent rust resistance and notable fusarium wilt tolerance, reducing chemical use and bed decline.
